What Is Google Slapper 2.0?

Basically, it is a blueprint to making money by getting involved in the advertisement and recommendations of products being launched. The blueprint highlights and focuses on online marketing products, but the methods are usable for any time there is a buzz being created. Are There Any Additional Expenses?

That all depends on you. It is possible to use the Google Slapper method without spending any additional funds. You can host your sites on free places like Squidoo, WetPaint, Weebly, Vox, and so many other places. They can actually do quite well – but ultimately, to really get serious about your online business, you are going to need to spend some money on your business. There is the expense of domain names, web hosting, and if you want to take it to the next level, an autoresponder service.

But at the same time, if you can make a single sale of some of the larger launches, you can bank $500-$1000 for a single sale. The expenses can easily be controlled – and really should be – until you are making some regular money.

How Good Is Jay’s Support For Google Slapper?

Reputation Management is the process of controlling your name or brand online. You can think about it as a way of controlling the rumor-mill. If someone is talking about you online, you need to know about. If someone is looking for you – you want them to find YOU, not someone else, right?

Think about this in terms of your local business. If you are a local store, for example: Bob’s Fish Shack. (Just FYI – I don’t know of a Bob’s Fish Shack, but it sounds like a great place to get your fishing gear.) Bob gets the word out about his shop with some flyers in town, some local advertising, and even his street sign.

But what happens when people go home, are trying to get ready for their trip in the morning and want to know when Bob opens? A few may open the yellow pages and look up Bob’s number. More and more people are going to Google and typing in the name of the store.

Now – if you are Bob, you really want people to find your store. Did you know that Google will often help you out by pulling up local stores based on your IP Address. Yep – they have some idea of where you might be and want to give you what you are looking for.

What else could a website want other than to be indexed by Google, right? They do have something like 49% of the search traffic. So, if you want to be found for anything, you need Google to see your site, right?

Well, as of the writing of this post, my site has yet to be indexed by Google. It has only been a month – but I gotta tell you, I am a bit frustrated by it. I have had other sites of mine get indexed within a couple of days! I am not sure why this one has not been indexed, but I have asked around for strategies to get listed by Google. I have done all of them (or at least most of them) – so I figured I would share the ideas with others in hopes that they might get indexed faster than I do.

Add Your Site to Google Webmaster Tools.

This tool gives you information about how Google sees your site. You can submit a site map, see how your robots.txt file is working and determine when Google has added you to their index.

Create A Sitemap.

A sitemap is a great tool to get your site indexed properly. A sitemap tells the search engines where all your pages are and which ones to include in the index. If you are using Wordpress – there is a great plug-in to create an XML sitemap for you. XML Sitemap Generator

Get Links To Your Site

This is the key to getting Google to look at your site! The key is to find sites that will link to your site without a ‘NoFollow’ tag. See, in Wordpress – most comments are NoFollow comments. That ‘NoFollow’ tag tells Google not to follow the link. Search Engine Journal has a great list of Social Bookmarking places that use DoFollow links. Check it out: Social Bookmarking Sites Which Don’t use NoFollow. If you want to get links back to your site and get indexed by Google – add your site to these various Social Bookmarking sites. Make sure that you do not spam the sites though!

Submit Your URL To Google

Add URL To Google – Often, this step is not necessary – as the above links will do it for you. But, hey – if you want to give it a try, go for it!

Create Keyword Targeted Profiles On Google Favorite Sites

OK, many people may hate that I am saying this, but look – if you want to rank, don’t you need to be out to win?!

The basic idea is to create a profile using a keyword you want to rank for – include a good paragraph / sales pitch in your bio and then leave it alone. Google crawls these sites frequently and will include your profile soon!

Do you write a blog and hope that no one will read it? I know I don’t! I want people to read what I have to write. Part of it is ego. The other is that I really do spend my time writing because I have a desire to help people. It is hard to feel like I have done that if no one is reading, right?

Well – that is where the need for Blog Traffic Tracking comes in. There are a number of tools available for blog traffic tracking – but I want to point out my 2 favorites.

Google Analytics

It is truly a great tool and it is free. They provide the code that you need to post into your web page to track the incoming traffic, source of traffic, destination, and so much more.

For wordpress users – there are a number of easy ways of adding Google Analytics to your blog. If you use the Thesis Theme, there is a built-in option with the theme to add your Google Analytics code. Doesn’t get much easier than that.

For others – you can add it to your footer.php page of your template. If you want to do it using custom functions, you can add the following code to your wordpress theme functions. This is my recommended method for non-thesis-theme-users. Not sure how to add custom functions to your theme. Here is a post on Adding Custom Functions To Wordpress Themes

Adding Google Analytics To Wordpress Using Hooks

As long as your theme has a place that calls the wp-footer action - your code will be added just fine. You can always add the segment above, view the source of your page, and make sure it is working just fine.

Alternative to Google Analytics

As an alternative to Google Analytics - one that is free and offers real time stats, you could try out Open Web Analytics. I personally love and hate it! Not sure why - read about why I Hate Web Analytics. I know - this post is about how great they are, but still...there is a draw back.

Back to OWA - OWA has a wordpress plug-in that makes it easy to setup and install. It does not work with the built in installer in wordpress 2.7. You have to FTP it up to your wp-content/plugins directory. If you use a web host that has cpanel, you can upload it in the .tar compressed format using the file manager. Then, select the file and extract it to the plugins directory. It is all stored in its own folder 'OWA'.

Once you have extracted it, go to your Wordpress dashboard and activate the plug-in. Enjoy getting real-time stats. It is fun, but addictive, so be careful.

It is great to have stats - but what do they mean and how should they affect your work online? Or should they at all? In the next week I will work up a post on how to dig into the stats and make some decisions about your website based on the stats you are seeing.

Everyone wants to tweek their theme, right? Why make it hard for them when you don’t have to? With this change, you can make it easy for anyone to override your CSS without editing the core theme files. That way, if you ever update the theme and they want to upgrade – it won’t require them to go in and change everything all over again.

Step 1 : Setting Up Your Directories

To make it easy to find and organize, I recommend that you create a custom folder inside your themes directory.

For example: wp-content/themes/your-theme/custom/

While you are in there, create a blank file and name it custom.css.

Step 2: Add custom.css to the header of your theme.

Yep – it really is pretty easy. Just go in and add the following line:

Step 3:  Add a custom tag to your body HTML tag of your template

See - CSS works in a great way - the more specific will override the more general. So, if you add the custom class to the body tag, you can override any style by just adding the custom class prefix.

That is it - now your template is ready to be modified with custom CSS.

How To Use the Custom CSS File

To use the custom CSS file, just add your styles to the custom.css file. You can add the .custom modifier to any tag and it will be add a level of detail that is not being used in the main stylesheet - allowing you to override the existing style.

Advantages of The Custom CSS File

The biggest advantage to this method is that you can mess around with your template without worrying about breaking it. If something breaks, just take out your changes in the custom.css - all your old styling will be back.

Future-Proof: If you ever upgrade your theme, your customized changes will still be around! They will not get overwritten or modified in any way.

A Bit Too Much For You?

A great alternative to doing all of this work is choosing a theme that already has this structure. The best theme on the market for Wordpress is the Thesis Theme. It uses the custom method I have listed above - and you do not have to do anything to get it up and running. Just open up the custom.css file and get going.

Go for it - it is worth the effort to make the change. Thesis is continually developed, upgraded, and improved-upon. You can't go wrong. I know I love it!

Adding Support For Custom Functions To Your Wordpress Theme

Web Analytics are such a great tool – don’t get me wrong. I love them. I have Google Analytics installed. In addition to that – as if Google Analytics, with its 80+ reports and ways of looking at traffic was not enough – I also have the Wordpress Plugin of Open Web Analytics (OWA). OWA gives real-time stats and it is directly in the dashboard of my blog. How easy is that!

Why I Hate Web Analytics

My problem and why I hate them….They suck up my time! OWA is particularly bad about this. It is just so easy to check my stats and see what is working, where I am getting my traffic, and if I am having a good or bad ‘traffic’ day.

But I Love Web Analytics Too…

Now – do not get me wrong, there are benefits to seeing what is going on. But, seriously, do I need to check them every day – multiple times a day? Wouldn’t I be better off writing another blog post, or commenting on a blog, or submitting an article to a web directory.

Break The Web Analytics Addiction

Weekly I do a blog post about my launching of this blog – for that, I have to get screen shots of my stats to share with everyone. For that reason, and that reason only, will I check my stats. It is at that point that I will make adjustments to my activities and determine what I need to do or change for the next week.

Get Unlimted Domains Hosted With Total Control

When you get into online marketing and online business development, having the ability to have multiple web sites set up quickly and easily is a must. There are a number of accounts out there that claim to give you unlimited space, unlimited domains, unlimited everything. But really – what does that mean?

The Dangers Of Shared Hosting

The accounts I described above are called ‘Shared Hosting’ accounts. The service providers sell you an account with 300 GB of space, 3 Terbytes of bandwidth, and just about everything else. But honestly, if every one of their accounts used the limits, their servers would crash! If you do not believe me – just get your page to the front page of Digg and see if your server doesn’t puke all over you. It happens.

The reason it happens: They oversell their servers. Overselling isn’t bad. It is just bad for the business owners that rely on the web service. Overselling is when the web host provider sells more disk space and bandwidth than they actually have to offer. It is fairly common practice for shared accounts. It is how they can offer so much for so little. They know that most people will never use all the space allocated for their account. And they are right.

An Alternative To Shared Hosting

My recommendation for anyone that is planning on building/hosting even just a few websites is to get your own Reseller Account.

First – What is A Reseller Account? It is a web hosting account that allows you to create additional accounts and sell or use them as you see fit. The advantage to this is that the space is not oversold. You will not get 300GB, but you

don’t need it either. You will get 25 GB or so. That is enough for a TON of sites!

You will also have control of those sites. You can reset their passwords, reset their quota limits, and in general – manage the various sites from a central management site. It is very handy.

You can also create as many accounts as you can fit into the space allocated. You can set up little 50 MB website accounts, each with their own domain name and hosting your own product, reviews, etc. You name it – you can do it.

You get a domain name reseller account – so you can buy the domain names and manage them on your own. Makes it easy to kep track of all of your domain names.

Second – Where Should I Get it? I personally really like HostGators Reseller program. The intro package is affordable. The customer service is quick. Their servers are updated, secured, and well managed. I would highly recommend considering a HostGator reseller account.

There are others out there – but I am very familiar with HostGator and since I try and only recommend what I am confident in – I will leave it at that.

A friend of mine sells ad space in the phone book – the yellow pages, or the yellow book – I am not sure which one it is. Some friend I am, huh? Well – I was talking with her about my misconception of the yellow pages. See, in my house, the yellow pages are used as stepping stools for my boys as they grow up and need a few more inches in height when they are being potty trained. We just wrap the books in duck tape, and there ya go – a disposable step stool.

Well, my friend and I talked about the market for the yellow book. It turns out that 67% of the population still turns to the yellow book to find local business services. Really? I would just go on google and search for it – but that is not the majority activity.

No – if you want to take your business to a new level – taking your online business, offline – you may find some value in looking into advertising in the yellow book. It can get costly, so you need to make sure you are careful with what you are willing to invest.

A few tips to track your yellow page advertisements

• Virtual Phone Number – use it only for your yellow pages number (Skype, Vonage, Other)
• Special email address
• Special Landing Page – easy to remember domain name that is redirected to your primary site and one that you can track
• Test the ad online first – Run it through google adwords. Run it online, where you can split-test it. Once you get it working, then – go offline with it

Believe it or not, online businesses can reach a whole new level by going offline. Just a thought – 67% is a lot of people!

Raise your hand if you have ever read a book, gone to a seminar, or listened to an audio program where the ‘Expert’ told you to create statements of Affirmation? Anyone? If you are not raising your hand – either you do not want to be embarrassed wherever you are for raising your hand because of a blog post – or you have not spent much time in the ‘Self-Help’, ‘Self-Improvement’, ‘Success’ section of your bookstore.

For the rest of us – we are guilty of this. By the way – how is it working for you? Did you get skinny by telling yourself that you were skinny? Yea – me neither! Are you rich because you told yourself, recorded your voice, listened to it over and over every day, until it happened? Ya know – it didn’t work that well for me either.

That brings me to the title of this post - SCREW AFFIRMATIONS! I am done with them. Fortunately, I have something to replace them with. I am very excited about this actually. I have already seen a drastic change in my day from this one little secret of sucess.

Transform Your Affirmations To Afformations

I am not going to rewrite the entire chapter on Afformations from Noah St. John’s Book, Secrets To Success. But I will tell you this – Afformations ROCK! They are the process of improving the questions you ask in your life.

Example Through Action

Do this for me – Tell yourself, out-loud, one of your affirmations. If you do not have one – use one of these: I am rich, I am skinny, I am wealthy, I am a success, I am loved.

Now – what was your internal dialog when you said your statement? What were your thoughts? What was the voice inside of your head saying as you made the statement that was not true but that you were trying so hard to believe?

Let me guess – ‘No you aren’t. You are not loved. You are fat. You are ugly. You are a failure. You are a quitter. You will never succeed because you never have before.” Any of that sound familiar?

Now – Try this – Ask yourself one of these questions:

• Why am I rich?
• Why do I love my spouse?
• Why am I successful?
• Why am I happy?

What is your internal dialog for those?

For me – I found myself seeking out answers to the questions and finding ways of answering it. Why am I rich? Because I have 4 healthy, happy, and loving children. Why do I love my spouse? This one rocked my socks off – I found so many awesome ways of appreciating my wife.

The awesome part of this whole thing is that it was so incredibily simple. I just hand to change my questions. Forget the statements – start asking questions and let your mind solve the problem. It is an awesome machine and can find solutions to problems you never imagined.

Recency-Frequency-Money Oh My

Perry Marshall, in one of the Tactic7.com conference calls discussed the need to segment your list. He talked about looking at Recency, Frequency, and Money – RFM. It is a great place to start in terms of segmenting your list, and it isn’t that difficult to do.

Recency

These are the people that have recently joined you, recently bought from you, recently bought from you a 2nd time. Each of those is a different segment of your list and deserves to be treated differently.

Brand-New Buyers/Registrants

Those that just signed up – you still need to build your credibility and your case for being trusted. Mail to them with the very beginning items.

Recent Purchasers

Those that recently purchased from you – guess what – they are likely to buy from you again. If they liked what they got from you, they are primed and ready for more. If they hated what they bought from you – oh well – you can’t hurt things at this point. Mail to them the next step in your sale funnel (you do have a sales funnel, right?).

Golden-Recent Purchasers

Those that bought from you for the 2nd time. Well, the 2nd purchase from you is the golden ticket. It means they like what you are offering and they are willing to spend money on your services/products. You have a chance to move them down the funnel or into cross-selling opportunities. Do not let these people move on without some special attention. They are likely to be your raving fans. Consider a special offer in exchange for a recorded interview, a testimonial, or some other endorsement.

Frequency

Now we look at people that are buying from you on a regular basis. They are your 2nd or more purchasers. They like what you are giving and are buying regularly. Your relationship with them is much different than those that just joined your list, right? Hey – they are putting money in your pocket, the least you could do is recognize them for it. Also, the more frequent they buy from you, the more likely they are to move down your funnel to your higher-end offerings and services.

Money

Yes, we segment based on money. Take a look at who is spending money on you. Those that are spending more money on your higher end products or by buying everything you offer – they are likely to continue doing so. Focus your message on moving them through your sales funnel quickly – reaching the most elite part of your sales process quickly.

Creating Segments In AWeber

Segmenting your list is made much easier with AWeber. If you have the AWeber analytics package, you can segment your list in many ways, but I would start with RFM and then decide what you want to do from there.
